Facts about Sexually transmitted diseases (STD's)

Get the 911 on the most common STDs.  You could have an STD and not experience any symptoms.  Some STDs exist without symptoms.  If left untreated, some of the most common STDs can result in serious health risks, infertility, and complications such as Pelvic Inflammatory Disease.  It’s your health…you need to know the risks.

Chlamydia
Chlamydia is the most frequently reported bacterial STI in the United States.  It can be transmitted by any form of sex, including vaginal, oral or anal.  Chlamydia is sometimes called the “silent” STI because the majority of infected people do not experience symptoms.

Gonorrhea
Gonorrhea is spread from one partner to another through contact with the penis, vagina, mouth, or anus.    If left untreated, Gonorrhea often causes Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) in women.

Genital Herpes
Genital Herpes is caused by the Type 1 (HSV-1) or Type 2 (HSV-2) Herpes Simplex Viruses.  Most people have little to no signs or symptoms from an HSV-1 or HSV-2 infection.

Human Papillomavirus (HPV)
Genital HPV is the most common STI. CDC estimates about 20 million Americans currently have HPV, and another 6 million new infections occur each year.

Syphilis
Syphilis is passed from one person to another through direct contact with a syphilis sore.  Sores usually occur on external genitals or in the vagina, anus or rectum.

Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)
Many sexually transmitted diseases, such as Chlamydia and Gonorrhea, can cause PID, an infection of the uterus, fallopian tubes and other parts of the reproductive system.   If left untreated, PID can lead to infertility or ectopic pregnancy.
